Colts fans, the Indianapolis community and the NFL are mourning the loss of Colts owner, Jim Irsay, who passed away yesterday at the age of 65. Reports confirm that he died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday afternoon. Aside from his football legacy, Irsay was known for his massive musical collection. Historical and rare instruments such as guitars from legendary musicians like Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, and many others. The drum set that Ringo Starr used. Elton John’s piano. Parts of the collection have been on tour several times over the last few years, but now with the death of Jim Irsay, the question is what will become of these instruments?
I think it would be very fitting and a beautiful tribute to Irsay for his daughters to fulfill their father’s dream of building a permanent museum here in Indianapolis. Allow fans to experience the historical instruments, as Irsay would have wanted. Charge a small admission, with all proceeds benefiting his ‘Kicking The Stigma’ campaign, focusing on mental health awareness.
I had a chance to talk with Larry Hall, Vice President Spec Projects/Historical Affairs Chairman, last year about the Jim Irsay Collection. Here’s the interview:
